What Air Force bases are near great or good Colleges or Universities?
I’m deciding on Air Force bases. I’m looking for bases near a college or a university. Which bases are near great schools and are in great neighborhood?

I’m with Jake on that one…why not try for the Air Force Academy and become an officer in the process.

Langley AFB in VA is near several good schools, Christopher Newport University, Hampton University etc. St Leo U comes on base up and down the East Coast.

Offutt AFB in NE is very close to Bellevue University and University of Nebraska at Omaha, Creighton University

Lackland/Randolph AFB in San Antonio TX are very close to Trinity University, University of Texas SA, Wayland Baptist, etc.

What are you trying to get your degree in?

Bolling AFB in DC is near several good schools, Howard University; Georgetown University; and University of DC are a few. Plus several schools offer courses at the base’s ed center. (ie Central Texas College and University of Maryland). All are military friendly and accept CCAF credits.

I hate to break the bad news to you but if you are thinking of joining the AF and are looking at which base you want to go to it more than likely will not happen. A very slim amount of people will get the base they want fresh out of tech school. They are polite and ask you where you would like to go but it usually doesn’t happen. My wife and I picked 8 bases and didn’t get one of them. Same happened with many others I know. In tech school they offer you the chance to switch with someone in your same career field but they usually have crappier bases too. When you graduate tech school your skill level is usually a 3 and some bases will not take people fresh out of tech school for certain jobs. I am not trying to be negative I am just trying to tell you like it is. A recruiter will tell you anything but ask others who are in and they will let you know that when you are new you very rarely get anything you want. The problem is that many people going into the AF right now are going in with open categories and that means you don’t even know your job until the last week or two of BMT. That was the way it was for almost everyone in my wife’s flight. Then when you find your job they show you a list of bases that will take you with that skill level. I am not saying you wouldn’t get your #1 choice but the odds are you probably won’t even get one in your top 8. This is especially true when trying to pick warm weather climates. If you pick Minot, Ellsworth, Grand Forks, and places like that you would probably get it.

RAF Mildenhall/Lakenheath: ~45 min to Cambridge
McGuire AFB: ~45 min to Princeton
Travis AFB: ~45 min to UC Davis
Vandenberg AFB: ~45 min to UC Santa Barbara
Buckley AFB: ~45 min to U of Colorado, Boulder
McChord AFB: ~45 min to University of Washington, Seattle
Scott AFB: ~30 min to Washington University, St. Louis
Andrews AFB: ~30 min to University of Maryland, College Park
Andrews AFB: ~30 min to Vanderbilt University
Davis Monthan AFB: ~30 min to University of Arizona
Hill AFB: ~30 min to University of Utah

Great neighborhoods? Might want to stay west…

edit: btw, thegunnman is right… you are unlikely to get what you want anyway, if you go active duty.

There is an Education Office on each base that does have a variety of colleges/universities to chose to use your Tuition Assistance at including ones that are local and ones that are not. You will not be able to use your GI Bill right away as you do have to serve 30 months of AD after you have completed Training and Schooling to get 100% Gi Bill. TA is limited to $4500 a fiscal year or 16 college credits. So do not base where you are wanting to go on the college itself, plus you could be putting in requests to go to the top places and end up in Timbuktu when it comes to orders. you are going to go where you are needed not necessarily on where you want to go.
